What is an MOT?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual inspection that follows strict criteria set by the DVSA to ensure vehicles meet environmental, safety and roadworthiness standards. It is a legal requirement to have a valid MOT on public roads.

What do I need to take to my MOT?

As an approved testing centre, we can view your vehicle details on the DVSA database so all you need to bring with you is the vehicle being tested! We also recommend bringing your fuel cap key and locking wheel nut key to your MOT test.

What should I check before my MOT?

Ensure your vehicle is in the best shape by checking for these minor faults that could easily be rectified before your MOT test.

  • Faulty or broken light bulbs
  • Tyres in poor condition
  • Screenwash that isn’t topped up
  • Worn wiper blades
  • Obstruction on the windscreen that blocks the driver's view (e.g., stickers, cracks or chips)
  • Dirty registration plate

Can I have my MOT done early?

To keep the same renewal date, an MOT can be booked up to one month (minus a day) earlier than your renewal date. For example, if you book an MOT 28 days before expiry, the MOT will be valid for 13 months.

If an MOT is booked earlier than one month before its expiry, the MOT will be valid 12 months from the new test date.

Can you drive without MOT?

It is a legal requirement for all vehicles on public roads to have a valid MOT (unless you’re on the way to a pre-booked MOT test).
